KARACHI, Oct 18: Leader of the Opposition in Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro said the treasury benches were not serious in carrying out legislation and it appeared that the session had been summoned just as a formality.

Mr Khuhro, who was addressing a press conference in his chamber in Sindh Assembly on Tuesday, pointed out that even after four days, the session was not starting on time and was being delayed almost daily because of late arrival of members of the treasury benches and it was the opposition which makes the quorum.

He said under the rules, the members were bound to sit for at least four hours daily in the session but it did not happen.

The PPP leader said that his parliamentary group had furnished over 500 questions, but there was no satisfactory reply or apology from the ministers for not answering the questions.

Mr Khuhro pointed out that the assembly had remained in session for only 70 or 71 days in a year as ministers are reluctant to sit in the House. By doing this, they were trampling of the sanctity of the House, he said.

He pointed out that it was a private members day on Tuesday, but the bills were not given priority. The government bill was given priority in the agenda.

“We submitted first adjournment motion about rigging in the local government polls, but it was not entertained,” he added.

Expressing concern over loss of one more day, he said they had requested the speaker to summon a meeting of the steering committee of the House on Wednesday to sort out why session was being delayed.
