ACCORDING to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Pakistan ranks 95th in the world in terms of deaths due to road traffic accidents (RTAs), and a good 67 per cent of RTAs are attributed to human errors. And one can well imagine that most of the human errors owe their origin to the increased tendency among drivers to attend phone calls and to indulge in texting while driving.
The younger the driver, the higher is the tendency to focus more on the phone than on driving. This means trouble not only for the other motorists on the road, but also for pedestrians, construction workers, police officials, paramedics and others.
There should be a complete ban on texting while driving, and the rule must be implemented in its true spirit through active vigilance, exorbitant fines across the board, and even suspending the driving licence.
