MR. F.S.R. Surita, counsel for prosecution, delivered his closing address on Friday in the fourth INA court martial trying Captain Abdul Rashid.

“The accused,” Mr. Surita said, “was selected by the INA as a suitable officer to carry out their scheme of compulsion, force and cruelties in order to bring men into the ranks of the INA. There is ample evidence to show that the accused not only used threats, but actually cruelly treated POWs who refused to join. You have a solid case of consistent ill-treatment at the hands of the accused, or at his instance, or with his knowledge, for which the accused is responsible.”

The accused, said Mr. Surita, was charged under three categories of offences — with having cruelly treated certain people, having abetted the cruel treatment of others, and having waged war against His Majesty the King Emperor of India. “The accused,” the prosecutor went on, “as Deputy Provost Marshal was holding the rank of a Major in the INA. It has definitely been proved that Captain Rashid was in charge of the concentration camp.”
