Profiteering goes unchecked

ATTOCK, Oct 8: The district administration has failed to check profiteering, black-marketing and hoarding despite strict orders by the provincial and federal governments. The local traders are paying no heed to the government’s announcement regarding 10 per cent reduction in the price of commodities under the Ramazan package. Instead the retailers have increased prices of vegetables and fruit from 30 to 100 per cent.

The grocers are also selling kitchen items like flour, ghee, sugar, gram powder, red chilies and other consumer goods at high rates. There are also complaints about shopkeepers and vendors selling low quality fruit and vegetables.

Tomato, which was available for Rs15 to Rs16 before Ramazan, was now being sold for Rs30 while price of onion increased from Rs15 to Rs20. Potatoes are being sold for Rs25 instead of Rs15, sugar for Rs30 per kg instead of Rs27; red chilies for Rs100 per kg against its price of Rs85 and gram powder for Rs33 per kg instead of Rs28. Similarly green chilies, peas, garlic and lemon are being sold for Rs55, Rs60, Rs55 and Rs52 per kg, respectively.

Similarly, beef was being sold between Rs100 to Rs110 per kg instead of Rs80, mutton for Rs180 to Rs200 per kg instead of Rs150 while milk was available for Rs24 per litre against the fixed price of Rs20.

Likewise, apple, banana, guava and grapes are being sold for Rs40 to Rs60 per kg, Rs25 to Rs30 per dozen, Rs40 per kg and Rs70 per kg, respectively.

Price of chicken has increased from Rs64 to Rs76 per kg while eggs are available between Rs34 to Rs40 per dozen.

Besides, the district administration has failed to set up a proper ‘Sasta Bazaar’.
