Arms smuggling bid foiled in Kohat

KOHAT/MANSEHRA: The Kohat police seized a large cache of unlicensed weapons and arrested a man on the Indus Highway on Thursday foiling an attempt to smuggle them to Miramshah town of North Waziristan tribal district.

ASP Vaqas Rafique and Saddar police station SHO Fayyaz Khan told reporters that 46 9MM pistols, three Kalashnikovs, six M16 rifles, six silencers and 50 chargers were seized at the Kohat Tunnel checkpoint during the checking of a car coming in from Peshawar.

He said the arms were hidden in the car’s secret cavities.

The ASP said both car and its driver, Nisar Khan of Mattani, Peshawar, were shifted to the police station.

He said the driver was booked under the arms act before and handed over to the investigation branch.

The ASP said the accused revealed that he’d to deliver the consignment to a man in North Waziristan tribal district.

He said the weapons might have to be used for terrorism and targeted killings.

Meanwhile, the Torghar police seized an anti-aircraft gun, hundreds of its rounds, and accessories in Malyar village claiming they’re buried by miscreants.

DPO Qamar Hayat Khan told reporters on Thursday that the seizure came on a tip-off and was being probed.

He said the police had begun an investigation to know who buried the anti-aircraft gun and its rounds and why.

Mr Qamar said the gun and ammunition were shifted to the Karor police station in Mera Madakheil area of Kunder Hassanzai tehsil.

He said the 12.7MM gun was used to down aircraft and destroy targets in far-off mountainous areas.
