PESHAWAR, Oct 6: Elections for the district and tehsil nazim posts were held in all the 24 districts without any untoward incident on Thursday. Barring some minor episodes in which supporters of candidates engaged in scuffles, no incident of violence was reported from anywhere.

Polling for the third round of local body elections began at 8am in the morning and continued without any disruption till 4pm.

Various political parties and electoral groups had entered into alliances and had fielded joint candidates for different slots.

A total of 11,604 elected members of union councils in the province exercised their right of vote in the province to elect one city district nazim, 23 district nazims, four town nazims in the city district, 50 tehsil nazims and 744 members of the district and town councils for reserved seats.

The Election Commission and police officials said that the polling was held in a peaceful atmosphere all over the province.

In Peshawar, polls were conducted peacefully and huge rush of voters and candidates’ supporters was witnessed outside polling stations.

The Election Commission had set up four polling stations in the city district where a total of 1,136 councillors cast their vote.

Chief Secretary Ijaz Qureshi, Inspector General of Police Rifat Pasha and senior officials visited polling stations.

At Town-II polling station, set up on Pajaghi Road, the returning officer complained about shortage of election staff.

He informed the chief secretary that due to lack of election staff the polling process was very slow and voters might require extra time to cast their vote.

There was one-to-one contest for the post of city district nazim. The Awami National Party-backed Watan Dost group and the Jamaat-i-Islami backed Al-Khidmat group had fielded former nazim Town-I Haroon Bilour against Haji Ghulam Ali, a joint nominee of the JUI (F), PPP-P, PPP-Sherpao and PML (N).

Four polling stations were set up for the four towns of Peshawar city district at City No I High School, Agriculture Training Centre on University Road, Pajjagi Road and Kohat Road.

Camps had been set up outside polling stations which were decorated with banners and posters.

APP adds: Polling station for town one had been set up at the Government High School G.T road, for town two at the Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled Children situated on Pajagi Road, whereas in town three the polling station had been established at the Agricultural Institute on Jamrud Road.

For town four the station had been set up at the Government High School Bedhber.
