Madiha and Saeed voted best athletes

LAHORE, Sept 28: The three-day Chief Minister Punjab Inter-school sports ended on Wednesday at Punjab Stadium without a winner of the general trophy.

The competitions in six different disciplines —- three for boys and as many for girls — were held.

Six boards which won one each discipline were Dera Ghazi Khan (football), Sargodha (hockey), Multan (athletics for boys), Lahore (athletics for girls), Faisalabad (basketball girls) and Gujranwala (volleyball for girls).

Rawalpindi and Bahawalpur failed to win any discipline.

The Punjab Sports Department secretary Arshad Bhatti said that each winner would get Rs 850,000 each.

He said that a total of Rs 8.5million would be distributed among top three teams of each discipline.

He said that 80 per cent of the prize amount would be used on improving the infrastructure of the winning school and the remaining 20 per cent was allocated for the headmaster, sports teacher and individual players who performed well.

HOCKEY: Government Jamia High School, (Sargodha Board) managed to win hard fought final beating Government Model High School, Model Town (Lahore Board) 5-3 after penalty strokes shootout after the two sides were level 1-1 in the stipulated time.

Sargodha took lead when Hassan Nawaz scored a field goal after receiving a fine pass from Tasawwur Iqbal.

Lahore showed more aggression in the second half and Shahzad netted the equalizer through a spectacular field goal on solo efforts in the 37th minute.

Muhammad Shafi, Gulfam, Amjad Yaqoob and Muhammad Akram scored off penalty strokes while Lahore could score only through Azeem Akram and Usman.

Two goals by Haroon Zaheer helped Government Model High School, Vehari (Multan Board) earn third position scoring a crushing 4-0 win over Government High School, Satellite Town, Bahawalpur (Bahawalpur Board).

Haroon was also declared the best player of the hockey event. Haroon scored in the 28th and 66th minute.

Hafiz Yousuf (3rd minute) and Khalid Manzoor (54th minute) were the other scorers.

FOOTBALL: Government MC High School, Layyah (Dera Ghazi Khan) defeated Government MC High School, Arifwala (Multan Board) in a nail-biting final decided on penalty kicks 4-3.

Both the teams failed to score in the regulation time.

For the winners Nabeel Iqbal, Irfan Iqbal, Muhammad Adnan and Muhammad Shehbaz scored from the spot while for the losers Arsalan Ali, Muhammad Ishaq and Muhammad Faisal were on target.

A hat trick by Nadeem Shehzad enabled Government High School, Choh Khalsa (Rawalpindi Board) obtain third place beating Central Model School, Mianwali (Sargodha Board) 5-0.

Nadeem struck in the 9th, 12th and the 20th minute while Yasir Yaseen (30th minute) and Muhammad Ajmal (59th) added a goal each.

Mohammad Asif of the runners-up was declared as the best player of the event.

VOLLEYBALL (Girls): Government Girls High School, Phalia (Gujranwala Board) beat Government Girls High School, Shadbagh (Lahore Board) 3-0 to win final of volleyball event.

The score was 25-16, 25-12, 25-12. Government High School RB 198, Matianwala (Faisalabad Board) beat Government High School No 1, Chakwal (Rawalpindi Board) 3-2 to claim the third spot.

The score was 25-22, 25-14, 15-25, 16-25, 25-20.

Amna Butt of the winning school was declared as best player.

BASKETBALL: Fine contribution by Aasma (12 points) and Shafqat Bano (10 points) enabled Government Zia Girls High School (Faisalabad Board) to emerge as basketball champions defeating Government Fatima Jinnah High School, Sheikhupura (Lahore Board) in a low-scoring final 27-22.

The winners led the first half 13-9. Sidra (14 points) was the main scorer for the losers.

Shafqat Bano of the winning school was declared as best player.

Government Pilot Girls High School, Sahiwal (Multan Board) claimed the third position beating Government High School, No.1 Chakwal (Rawalpindi Board) 32-23.

ATHLETICS: Government High School Chichawatni, Sahiwal (Multan Board) with 88 points won the boys’ athletics event.

Imran Sarwar of the winners was declared as the fastest athlete. Saeed Irfan of Dera Ghazi Khan clinched the title of best athlete.

Government Comprehensive High School, Muzaffargarh (Dera Ghazi Khan) obtained 67 points to claim the second position.

Government High School GB 199 (Faisalabad) with 42 points remained third.

Government High School, Awan Town (Lahore Board) scored 79 points to win girls team title.

Madeeha Latif, who won seven gold medals for the winning school was declared as the best athlete.
