LAHORE: Even-money favourite filly Dahab galloped to a magnificent victory in the Haroon Ghani Cheema Cup during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday.
Dahab’s triumph bears no discussion as she had already the race won as the field turned heads in the straight during the 1,100 metres run under jockey Deenar Mirwani.
The winner, which was trained by Haji Abid Mahmood and is owned by Malik Salman Khalid, beat colt JF thunder by a big margin of six lengths with Legacy and Gondal Prince completing the frame.
The owner received the cup from Lahore Race Club (LRC) steward Mahmood Rafi Khan at a makeshift ceremony
A race earlier the same owner and trainer combination was seen at advantage when they had registered the first cup victory through their bay filly Purnoor when she beat the Tauqir Ahmed-trained bay colt Breaking Bad in Lahore’s first race of the season, the Naunehal Cup run over 1,000 metres.
Bay filly, ridden by jockey Tahir Abbas in the juveniles’ race, dominated the field and looked to be going like the winner throughout the race.
LRC steward Abdul Qadir Khan Mamdot gave away the cup to the winning owner. This was a rare feat in which an owner and a trainer’s combination had won two feature prizes in a day.
