Shabbir retains top slot

LAHORE, Sept 24: Shabbir Iqbal posted another fine round of five-under-67 to maintain top slot on the second day of the Rachna Open golf championship at the Gujranwala Club course on Saturday. Shabbir from Islamabad looks fantastic indeed with a round of six-under-par-66 on the first day and is now aggregating 133 to lead the professionals.

Shabbir was in full control after a bogeyeless second day with three birdies on the 2nd,8th and 16th holes and an eagle on the closing par-5, 18th through a chip-in from 15 yards from the Green, which he reached with a driver from the tee and a controlled four wood from the fairway.

Shabbir is facing challenge from M Munir of PTCL, who had aggregated 140,seven strokes behind. He also played a bogey free round with three birdies. Afzal Mohsin of Lahore Gymkhana is trailing at the third with aggregate 142 while at the fourth position Abbas Ali (Lahore Gymkhana), Amjad Yousaf (Karachi), Imdad Hussain (Lahore Garrison) are bracketted.

The amateurs’ event also teed off on Saturday and after the 18 holes, Fakhar Imam formally of Royal Palm turned out to be leader with a par round of 72, managing 5 birdies but also losing as many strokes. Sunday is the last day.
