FAISALABAD, Sept 20: The Sargodha Road police registered a case against former SP (investigation) Abdullah Khalid, Inspector Jamshed Iqbal Chishti and his gunmen Iqbal and Fareed on the charge of wrongful confinement of Sonia Naz’s husband Asim Yousaf Malik.

The case was registered on the directive of Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi on the findings of the one-man tribunal headed by district and sessions judge Abdul Waheed Khan.

Police sources said the DPO received a directive from the IGP for immediate registration of the case.

The judge, in his findings said: “From the evidence brought on record and statements of the various police officials, it has been established that Asim Yousaf was wrongfully taken into custody and subsequently ran away from police constables but his arrest was not entered in record.”

He added: “None else but SP Abullah Khalid was responsible for the wrongful confinement of Asim, therefore liable to be proceeded against under the law.”

The tribunal, however, declared that the allegations of abduction, rape and torture, levelled by Sonia Naz were unfounded on the basis of the evidence and material available on its record.

The tribunal conducted proceedings in seven days and recorded statement of 22 witnesses of which 18 were police and excise and taxation officials.

Faisalabad range DIG Sajjad Ahmad was specially summoned by the tribunal by telephone even after the expiry of normal court timing and asked to record his statement.

The case has been registered under Section 342 PPC which is a bailable offence and maximum punishment is one year imprisonment or with fine which may extend to Rs1,000 or both.
