PESHAWAR: Speaker Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani has summoned the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly session on August 25 on the requisition of 37 lawmakers of the opposition parties, an official notification issued here on Wednesday said.

An opposition lawmaker told Dawn that the previous session which was prorogued on July 31 was summoned by the government. He said that mostly official business, including bills, was discussed in the last session and the opposition was not provided sufficient time to bring matters of public importance on the agenda. He said important items, including questions and adjournment motions moved by the opposition, were not discussed.

Meanwhile, Speaker Mushtaq Ghani re-notified 37 standing committees and the Public Accounts Committee which were dissolved about six months ago to include MPAs from the newly-merged tribal districts. The treasury and opposition benches had unanimously empowered the speaker to appoint chairpersons and members of the committees.

With the induction of MPAs from the merged districts the number of members of each standing committee has been increased from nine to 11.

Mushtaq Ghani has been appointed chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and the Law Reforms Committee.
