Deaths from Covid-19 related hunger can exceed number of fatalities from virus itself, warns Oxfam

Poverty and hunger resulting from the novel coronavirus crisis can lead to more deaths than the disease — that has killed more than 549,000 people worldwide — itself, Oxfam has warned.

In a press release dated July 9, Oxfam said that that Covid-19 related hunger can kill 12,000 people per day by the end of this year. A little more than 10,000 people were dying of Covid-19 per day in April, when the peak of the virus casualties was recorded.

According to an Oxfam report, The Hunger Virus, Covid-19 is "deepening the hunger crisis in the world's hunger hotspots". Additionally, the health crisis is giving birth to new "epicentres of hunger" across the world.
