Popalzai says Eid moon not sighted, but N. Waziristan body disagrees

PESHAWAR/MIRAMSHAH: Peshawar’s Qasim Khan Mosque said on Friday that it had not received evidence about the sighting of Shawwal moon from anywhere in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “Therefore, Eidul Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday (tomorrow),” Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai, who heads the mosque’s moon-sighting committee, said after a meeting in the evening.

But a self-appointed committee in North Waziristan tribal district came up with a claim late in the night that it had received “seven eyewitness accounts” about the sighting of the moon. Hence, Eid will be celebrated on Saturday (today), a representative of the committee said after a meeting at a mosque in Haiderkhel village, near Miramshah.

Maulana Rafiullah headed the body.
