Sumit, Jawairiah crowned champions

ISLAMABAD, Sept 2: It was double delight for top seed Sumit Prakash Gupta of India who landed the boys’ singles and doubles crowns in the ITF International Junior tennis tournament that concluded at the Islamabad Club on Friday.

In what was a one-sided match Prakash crushed his compatriot Kinshuk Sharma 6-1, 6-3 to capture the singles title and later teaming up with Anshuman Ditta, picked up the doubles too with a 6-3, 6-4 knockout of Thailand’s Khunpol Issara and Sharma.

The girls singles final was the toughest of the day, third seed Jawairiah Noordin of Malaysia fighting it out with Indian top seed Karina Ahuja for two hours and 10 minutes before winning 3- 6, 6-3, 6-4.

Jawairiah, who had also won the doubles title on Thursday, is the first Malaysian girl to land the ITF singles crown in Pakistan.

The second leg of the tournament is due to start in Lahore from Saturday with two-day qualifying rounds while the main round will start on Monday.

In the first leg, 100 players from US, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Canada and Pakistan took part but no home player could make the semifinal of any event.

Girls doubles final: Inyat Khosla (Ind)-Jawairiah Noordin (Mas) bt Karina Ahuja-Tejaswini Datla (Ind) 6-2, 6-2.
