KARACHI, Sept 2: A division bench of the Sindh High Court on Friday expressed dissatisfaction over the comments submitted by a police inspector in a petition alleging illegal arrest and confinement.

The petitioner, Husn Ara Begum, said the police raided her house in Mobina Town at midnight on Aug 28 to arrest her husband, Mehram Ali Chandio. When the raiding party failed to trace her husband, it caught hold of her nephew to put pressure on the family to surrender Chandio. The petitioner said Chandio was implicated in a false rape case but was later discharged.

Inspector Shahid Qureshi submitted in his comments that Chandio was involved in the gang-rape case of Mariam Bano of Gulshan-i-Iqbal. There were nine other cases registered against him in which he had been declared an absconder. There was, however, nothing in the comments about the involvement of detainee Abdul Hakim in any case or offence and the police officer could not explain why he was taken into custody or was being kept in confinement.

The bench asked the police to submit detailed comments and affidavit on Sept 5.

NAYADAUR MOTORS CASE: The Sindh High Court asked an accountability court on Friday to conclude trial of an accused in the Nayadaur Motors scam within two months, after which he would become entitled to release on bail in the sum of Rs 16 million.

Petitioner-accused Noor Tawakkal is facing trial along with others for misappropriating about Rs 753 million in deposits made by prospective buyers of Kia-Ceres cars under a scheme widely advertized by them. There are three absconders in the case.

Appearing for the petitioner, Advocate Shahab Sarki argued that Noor Tawakkal, who had been admitted to hospital, was entitled to bail on statutory and medical grounds.

Advocate Raja Qureshi, who contested the petition as special counsel for the National Accountability Bureau, argued that the case was being delayed by the accused.

The bench ordered the trial accountability court to conduct the proceedings on a day to day basis and conclude the trial within two months, failing which the accused would become entitled to bail in the sum of Rs 16 million.
