KARACHI, Sept 2: The Inspector General of Sindh Police, Asad Jehangir, has directed the DIG Traffic to take steps for ensuring implementation of the “traffic warden system” at schools.

In this regard, he said, the school managements should be contacted to select regular volunteers who, during school hours and after, would help children cross the roads safely.

He was talking to a 10-member delegation of the Defence Residents Society at the Central Police Office on Friday.

He pointed out that the traffic warden system was part of community policing whereby voluntary cooperation was extended to police under the road safety concept.

The delegation said the traffic flow suffered because of improper traffic signal working timings.

The IGP, in this regard, directed the DIG to hold a meeting with the Traffic Engineering Bureau and the DHA, review the issue, and take steps for modifying traffic signal timings.

In view of reservations expressed by the delegation about registration of FIRs, Asad Jehangir asked the CCPO Karachi to ensure the registration of FIRs on the basis of a written complaint duly signed by the complainant.

About the elimination of street crimes, the IGP informed that the police had started a research on scientific lines whereby not only the modus operandi of criminals but the timings of committing of crimes were being studied and preventive measures taken accordingly.

On the occasion, the CCPO Karachi informed that a website of Karachi Police would soon be functional from where news bulletins on police performance and anti-crime measures would be released every fortnightly.—APP
