ISLAMABAD: Five more police officials, including the station house officers (SHO) of two stations, have been suspended on corruption charges.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) (DIG) Waqaruddin Syed suspended the officials on Monday after receiving complaints about their involvement in corruption, the police said.

They said that the DIG was also unhappy with the performance of supervisory officers, including superintendents of police (SP) and sub-divisional police officials, for failing to curb corruption in their areas.

Inquiries have been ordered against the suspended officials and an SP from the Counter Terrorism Force has been asked to establish the facts. The SP has been asked to submit a report within a week for further departmental action against them.

The suspended officials include SHOs of Koral and Nilore, SI Mohammad Hanif, OSI Operations Division SI Mohammad Asif, head countable and assistant to the OSI Mohammad Yameen and Constable Mohammad Asad from the Sabzi Mandi police station.

Two days ago, eight police officials were suspended on corruption charges, police said. They included six assistant sub-inspectors (ASI), a head constable and a constable. Of the six ASIs, three were beat officers in the Sadar Zone area.

A senior police officer told Dawn that the officials were found to be involved in accepting bribes in exchange for overlooking unlawful activity.

They allegedly caught people involved in activities banned to prevent the spread of Covid-19, such as riding pillion, holding social gatherings and running passenger vehicles, but let them go after accepting bribes, he said.

The inquiries against the eight officials are being conducted by the senior superintendents of police from their respective areas.

A police spokesperson said DIG Syed on Monday suspended five police officials, including the heads of two police stations, for dereliction of duty and involvement in corruption.

He said the SHOs of various stations were reshuffled after their performance was found to be satisfactory, but did not share the reason for the reshuffling.

Sihala SHO Inspector Asjad Mehmud has been appointed SHO Koral, Shalimar SHO Inspector Malik Bashir as SHO Sihala, Inspector Sattar Baig as SHO Nilore, while SI Salman Shah serving at theCrime Investigation Agencyhas been appointed as Shalimar SHO, he added.
