‘Redressing people’s grievances, elimination of crimes top priorities’

KARACHI: Newly appointed Inspector General of the Sindh Police Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar spelled out his priorities while presiding over his first meeting on law and order at the Central Police Office on Wednesday.

“Addressing people’s grievances and prevention of crimes are first priorities,” said Mr Mahar, vowing that “black sheep” in the police would not be tolerated.

The provincial police chief informed all additional IGs, deputy IGs and senior superintendents of police about his policy and priorities and issued necessary orders to that effect.

Special attention should be paid to the people’s grievances being received at the complaint centres established across the province for their timely resolution.

Prevention of crimes should not only be made first of the priorities, but the officers should prepare a schedule for regular meetings with the public so that relief could be provided to them and police’s assistance ensured.

Investigation of crimes should be improved through a joint strategy by the operational investigation wings of the police while coordination should be ensured with the prosecution.

He said there should be no delay in DNA tests required for the cases.

The IG directed that police patrolling plan be chalked out in view of an analysis of crimes, its patterns etc at the police station level so that the strategy for the elimination of crimes could be made more effective.

He said that control over law and order and protection of the people’s lives and properties was their first job, therefore, no negligence would be tolerated in that regard.

“There is no place for black sheep in the police force,” said the IG.

Mr Mahar said the detection of crimes and conviction of criminals was the primary responsibility of the police, therefore, all necessary steps should be made more effective and result-oriented.

He said he would personally visit different districts to assess the performance of the police.

“Crackdown against the proclaimed offenders not only be ensured, but their hideouts should be eliminated and their patrons be taken to task,” said the IG.

He issued directions for the elimination of crimes against women, children and minorities and immediate police response and action should be ensured over such complaints.

He also asked the DIGs and SSPs to personally monitor the investigation of killing of policemen. Besides, he also asked the CTD to “solve” all those cases which had remained “untraced” so far.

He said that proactive policing should be made an effective weapon against crimes by taking impartial and indiscriminate action against all criminals.

The IG also issued direction for taking coordinated and effective steps for the welfare of the police and their families.
