Four presiding officers held in Jhang

JHANG, Aug 25: At least two people were killed while 20 others injured in election-related violence here on Thursday while four presiding officers were arrested on rigging charges.

The incidence of scuffle, clash, delay in start of polling, malpractice in ballot papers, misprinting on ballot papers, non-availability of polling staff, anomalies in voters’ lists and polling schemes were also reported from over 60 polling stations of the district.

In UC-83, Ahmed Khan, son of Sardar Khan of Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat group and Muhammad Khan, son of Muhammad Nawaz of Ghulam Ahmed Gandi group, were killed during firing while Nawaz, Langhar, Manzoor, Shahbaz, Ahmed and Allah Jawai sustained serious injuries.

In UC-3 of Chiniot, 12 people sustained injuries.

Two people, belonging to Akhtar Abbas Bharwana group, Ghulam Murtaza, Muhammad Nawaz, and Liaquat of Sahibzada Nazir Sultan group were injured in Shorkot UC-106.

In Jhang city, one Ghulam Akbar injured councillor candidate Aftab with bricks.

Muhammad Raza, Ghulam Abbas and Muhammad Aslam of the Mehar group were injured seriously in UC-64.

Four presiding officers Tahir Rasool, Syed Saleem Taqi Shah, Rana Ijaz and Sajjad Husain were arrested by Kotwali police on the complaint of Muhammad Nawaz, the reader of Additional District & Sessions Judge Salahuddin.

They were booked under Sections 165, 167 of the Punjab Local Government Ordinance and 171/34 of the PPC. Zafar Baloch, a Sadhiana UC naib nazim hopeful, who had allegedly planned rigging in connivance with the polling officers, escaped. —Shamsul Islam Naz
