LAHORE, Aug 18: A gutsy unbeaten century by left-handed J P Duminy and his contribution in three valuable partnerships helped South Africa Academy to finish the first day of the second “Test” against the Pakistan Academy at a comfortable position by reaching 224 for five wickets in the first innings at the Qadhafi Stadium on Wednesday.
Duminy came at the crease when the tourists had lost two wickets for 18, after winning the toss and electing to bat first on a placid wicket. He was unbeaten 125 and his unbroken sixth-wicket stand with Ryan Canning (19) had produced 105 runs in 153 minutes. So far he had struck 12 fours and three sixes off 253 balls.
Duminy had steadied the innings which received early shock from medium-pacer Yasir Ali who took two quick wickets. Yasir removed opener Thandi Tshabalala (2), caught by captain Hasan Raza at second slip and then had tourists’ skipper Francois Du Plessis LBW for four.
He held the innings together and first collected 50 runs off 68 minutes with Kyle Smit (38, four fours, 67 balls) for the third wicket. Smit was clean by off-spinner Tariq Mahmood.
Duminy, later joined hands with Vaughan Jaarsveld (22, three fours, 61 balls) in the fourth wicket partnership which yielded 49 runs in 82 minutes, taking the total to 117 before leg-spinner Mansoor Amjad put the visitors again in trouble taking two quick wickets.
First Mansoor clean bowled Jaarsveld at the total of 117 and then had the next man Vemon Philander (3) caught by Shahid Yousaf, who held a low catch at Besides three sixes, in all he had cracked 12 boundaries.
Earlier, soon after medium-pacer Yasir Ali completed the first over of the day, heavy clouds, followed by rains wasted 80 minutes play.
To recover the loss of time, the play continued till 6pm, covering 60 minutes loss. The remaining 20 minutes will be recovered on Friday.
The home team made two changes, including off-spinner Tariq Mahmood and medium-pacer Fahad Masood in place of Mohammad Irshad and Khurram Manzoor.
