ISLAMABAD, Aug 18: The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War has called for global disarmament to make the world a better place to live in, said a press release on Thursday.

A small delegation of IPPNW’s students chapter from Sweden, Norway and Nepal is visiting Islamabad to join hands with local peace activists and to advocate for the elimination of nuclear and conventional arms all over the world.

The statement was jointly issued by the Citizens Peace Committee, Pakistan-India Peoples’ Forum for Peace and Democracy, Actionaid and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.

The nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference held in New York in May, it said, missed the opportunity to move towards nuclear disarmament, largely due to the US unwillingness to make concessions in its nuclear policy.

Further, the very fact that Pakistan and India are nuclear weapon states, that have not signed the treaty, makes South Asia a dangerous flashpoint, it added.

After 9/11 and the recent London bombings, the fear of radioactive material falling into the ‘wrong’ hands is growing. Global disarmament is the solution out of this precarious situation.

During the NPT review conference, the IPPNW was very active, organizing panel discussions, attempting to convince delegates, joining demonstrations and events supporting nuclear disarmament.
