PESHAWAR, Jan 15: The anti-smuggling squads of the customs collectorate, Peshawar, has seized a large quantity of smuggled goods in some 24 cases of confiscations from different parts of the province during the last eight days.

According to a press release issued by the collectorate here on Tuesday, the market value of the confiscated goods has been estimated at about Rs3 million.

Seizures involving cloth, tyres, auto parts, black tea, pepper, cosmetics, cigarettes, tooth pastes and several other items were made from Peshawar, Dera Ismail Khan, Azakhel, Nowshera, Kund and certain other places on the Grand Trunk Road.

The contraband were seized by the customs squads when these were being smuggled from different parts of NWFP to Punjab.

A total of 24 cases were registered under the relevant sections of the Customs Act 1969 and in some cases vehicles in which these goods were being transported were also impounded.

In two of the incidents, the customs staff recovered and seized charas and some 1.4kg heroin and arrested one accused peddler on the charge of possessing heroin.

MOBIL OIL: According to another press release issued on Tuesday, the staff of the customs division, Kohat, impounded three trucks carrying smuggled mobil oil. The trucks (PTR 0181, Peshawar E-7446 and C-9117) were taken into custody near Kohat.

The authorities seized 570 cartons of non-duty paid mobil oil and arrested three persons and registered cases against them under the Customs Act 1969.
