Body on jail reforms meets in Haripur

HARIPUR: The oversight committee on implementation of jail reforms held its meeting here on Thursday with deputy commissioner, Haripur, in the chair.

The committee was formed and notified by the provincial home department in the light of recommendations of the federal ombudsman that were framed following a suo motu notice of the apex court.

The recommendations called for implementing reforms that included improving conditions in jails for prisoners, especially women, children and inmates lacking sufficient resources.

The committee had last year presented its recommendations for improvements that were sent to the home department. It again discussed the problems and needs of the jail inmates and decided to visit the Haripur jail on Saturday for compiling another set of recommendations.

Human rights activist Sadaqat Khan, jail superintendent Maqsood Khan Khattak, assistant superintendent Saood Khan, Dr Muhaiman from the University of Haripur, advocate Jawad Habib and advocate Gulnaz Rasheed were the members present in the meeting.
