PESHAWAR, Aug 4: A local court on Thursday dismissed the bail application of a person charged with desecration of the Holy Quran. The court, which was presided over by Judicial Magistrate Shah Hussain Khan, observed that the accused did not deserve to be released on bail.

The applicant, Mohammad Rehman, son of Mewa Khan, was arrested by the officials of the Gulbahar police station after a case was registered against him by the prayer leader of the Farooq-i-Azam Jamia Mosque, Maulana Mohammad Shafiq, in Akhunabad No. 4 on July 19. He was charged under section 295-B of the PPC dealing with offence of defiling the Holy Quran.

The prosecution alleged that the man, who is about 22, was engaged in a quarrel with his father during the night. The inhabitants of the locality on hearing the din gathered outside their residence.

Rehman’s mother intervened and tried to control him but in vain. She later brought a copy of the Holy Quran to her son and asked him to stop fighting with his father.
