PESHAWAR, Jan 14: A unified command structure, supported by six divisions, in the NWFP’s health sector has been recommended with a view to improving the health delivery system.

A meeting of the stakeholders, with Secretary Health Muhammad Saleem in the chair, was held to deliberate an interim report concerning health sector reforms. Titled “institutional analysis report,” prepared by consultant Stevens Hyes, was presented for discussion.

The study, conducted in eight months, was funded by the Asian Development Bank to provide technical assistance for health sector reforms.

The ADB has provided a grant of up to $5,00,000 to make the health system in the NWFP more effective, efficient and equitable, resulting in greater patient benefits and satisfaction. Project Director, Mike Naylor and Dr Abdul Ghaffar, co-project leader, spoke at length on the subject.

It was suggested that there should be a unified command structure in the aftermath of devolution of powers to the districts and creation of district cadres.
