Peaceful use of nuclear energy highlighted

SWABI, July 25: Nuclear technology if used for peaceful purposes, instead of making weapons of mass destruction, could produce a lot of electricity and solve many problems of the people. This was stated by Dr Inamur Rehman, who was delivering a lecture in the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology on Monday. He served the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) for over four decades.

He said science and technology could not save the world from destruction. Science was not destructive by itself, its use made the difference, he added.

Dr Inam said the world was in turmoil and had failed to utilize the atomic energy in the best interest of human beings. “When uranium was discovered in 1789, nobody knew about its use,” he recalled.
