Raja Pervaiz given more time in Gepco case

LAHORE: Former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said on Wednesday the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) reemerged whenever attempts were made to push it against the wall in the past.

Responding to media queries outside an accountability court, he said “The rehbar committee” of the opposition will finalise the nominee for the senate chairman.”

To a query if the opposition will succeed in electing its chairman, Mr Ashraf said it would transpire on the day of election.

Earlier, the court adjourned the trial till July 13 and allowed time to Ashraf’s counsel to file reply to the questionnaire submitted by the NAB.

The NAB accused Mr Ashraf of making illegal appointments in the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) during his stint as federal minister for water and power. It said the former prime minister misused his powers and appointed 437 people in the Gepco from his electoral constituency without any merit.

Former secretary water and power Shahid Rafi, former directors of Gepco’s boards of governors including Saleem Arif, Malik Muhammad Razi Abbas and Wazir Ali were also involved in the same reference filed in 2016.
