‘A mockery of election code of conduct’

FAISALABAD, July 19: The candidates for the local-body polls are allegedly violating the code of conduct and election rules by throwing parties, displaying banners, airing interviews on cable networks and exploiting the names of political parties. During a round of the city areas and some villages, it was observed that the candidates had also not abstained from wall-chalking and displaying banners showing photographs of their “political masters.”

The photos of the prime minister, the chief minister, the Punjab governor and opposition leaders — Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif — have been displayed in many areas.

It was also observed that the political parties were directly involved in electioneering and issuing tickets in violation of the Election Commission’s instructions about holding polls on a non-party basis.

Also on the forefront are sitting parliamentarians both from the treasury and the opposition benches, who are conducting interviews of their candidates.

The candidates are flagrantly arranging meetings by blocking roads and serving sumptuous meals in their constituencies.

CBR: The Central Board of Revenue has made it obligatory on all sales tax-registered persons to submit a monthly summary statement of all sales and purchases.

Sources said a summary statement would be submitted in respective collectorates of sales tax by 15th of every month.

The Faisalabad Collectorate of Sales Tax and Central Excise has created a dedicated cell, which would receive these statements. All trade bodies and associations have been informed about the decision.

However, sources said, the registered persons dealing in cotton yarn, blended yarn or man-made yarn, textile fabrics, garments, leather, carpets, surgical and sports goods were not required to submit a summary statement.
