UPPER DIR: The residents have demanded the development of Shahzor lake in Kumrat Valley saying it will help promote tourism in the region.
The lake is located around 10,000 feet above the sea level on Dir-Chitral border with people requiring two hours to reach there on foot from Dojanga area in Kumrat.
The residents told Dawn that the way to the lake was not difficult as it mostly passed through a plain area.
“We first walk on a mountainous way for 20-25 minutes and then take a smooth path to reach the lake,” said Gul Akbar of Thal area.
He said the Kumrat valley had many beautiful lakes.
Member of an Upper Dir hiking team Sakhawat said he had gone to the Shahzor lake some times and found it to be a wonderful place for hikers.
He said the presence of beautiful natural wildflowers on both sides of the way to the lake made the journey pleasant.
“Looking at beautiful wildflowers, I didn’t feel tired all through the journey,” he said.
Another hiker said there were no hotels near the lake so staying there overnight wasn’t possible.
He said though there was a lack of facilities, the visit to Shahzor lake was full of adventure and excitement.
“It’s a wonderful sight when snow-covered mountains are reflected in the bluish water of the lake,” he said.
Anwar Ali of Byar area said not only Shahzor lake and Kumrat were picturesque but the entire Kohistan region was worth visiting.
He said the government should ensure basic facilities in the region for tourism promotion.
The residents and tourists said the Shahzor lake could be made an attraction for visitors through the construction of access roads, hotels and tent villages, and provision of cellphone services.
