From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1969: Fifty Years Ago: Girl students’ complaint

KARACHI: Many girl students have complained to the Road Transport Corporation (RTC) against the manner in which the conductors of the Omni Bus Service scrutinise their identity cards for issuing concessional tickets. The complaints have been looked into and preliminary investigations show that they are partly “valid and justified”, an RTC source said [April 5].

The girls had alleged that instead of glancing through the identity cards, the bus conductors “stared” into the photographs affixed on the identity cards — followed by gestures of appreciation or otherwise.

Some “embarrassed” girls informed the RTC they would prefer paying the full fare rather than come across “such situations” again.

Following the complaints, the RTC has decided to exempt girl students from showing their identity cards to the bus conductors. A reference in this connection has been made to the RTC Headquarters at Lahore for approval of the proposal.
