NOWSHERA: Thousands of devotees from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, tribal districts and other parts of the country attended the weeklong Urs celebrations of Sufi saint Syed Kasteer Gul, popularly known as Kaka Sahib, which concluded at Ziarat Kaka Sahib town here on Sunday.

Different events, including stunts, swing rides and flying boats featured the celebrations, which concluded with the ritual raising of flag (Nishaan), laying of floral wreath on the shrine, reciting of holy Quran, qawwali and distribution of food.

The shrine of 16th century saint is located in a rugged mountainous area 12km south of Nowshera district. It is considered as one of the most frequently visited religious heritage sites in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The participation of large number women and girls was quite visible in Urs for the first time. Different kinds of stalls for women and children had also been set up.

A volleyball tournament was also arranged to entertain the visitors. A special committee had been formed for hospitality and care of guests.

Like previous years, Kaka Sahib town came alive with unusual rush of visitors streaming up and down. Tight security arrangements were made by the local administration to facilitate the devotees during the celebrations.

Sarfaraz Khan, 70, a devotee of Kaka Sahib from Karak, said he had been coming here along with family to attend the Urs of the Sufi saint for last many years. He said it gave them a great solace.

According to religious scholars, Kaka Sahib lived in the Mughal-era and had spread religious education and advocated peace, brotherhood and humanism.

They said he always helped the poor and needy and used to impart religious education to his pupils. A Sufi musical concert and Naat recitation session were also held.
