LAHORE, July 10: Ignoring the chief election commissioner’s warning, the ruling and the opposition parties on Sunday continued interviewing and selecting their candidates for the forthcoming local body polls.

CEC Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar had announced only a day before (on Saturday) in Lahore that interference of political parties in the non-party local polls would not be tolerated while the candidates using any party’s forum might be disqualified.

A great rush of costly jeeps and cars was seen at the Muslim League House on the Davis Road where the ruling PML was interviewing nazims and naib nazims for Gulberg and Nishtar towns on Sunday. For Data Ganj Bakhsh Town, the exercise will be held on Monday (today) when the election commission will be issuing the code of conduct for candidates.

Senator Kamil Ali Agha, outgoing Lahore district nazim Mian Amer Mahmood, PML city president Mian Munir and national/provincial assemblies’ ticket-holders from the relevant union councils were on the committee quizzing the hopefuls — about five to six panels of nazims and naibs for each union council.—Amjad Mahmood
