PESHAWAR, July 10: The Leader of opposition in the National Assembly, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has said that the US-India defence pact would create instability in South Asia.

Speaking at a press conference here on Sunday, he said that the strategic cooperation between US and India would create a war-like situation in the region.

He said that Washington had signed the pact with New Delhi at a time when the Kashmir dispute had not been resolved, adding that he was not sure about peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue in the near future.

He said that President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s pro-US policies did not provide any benefit or relief to Pakistan.

Maulana Fazl, who is also chief of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, condemned London bombings, asking America and its allies to review their global policies.

“America and European countries should avoid use of force and find out political solution of all issues,” he said and added that the West’s policies had endangered world peace.

When asked whether the NWFP government would face any threat with the passage of the proposed Hasba Bill in the provincial assembly, he said “not at all”.

Under the 1973 constitution, the provincial assembly can adopt laws for the benefit of the people of the province, he said, adding that the MMA government was not violating the constitution.

He said that the proposed bill would help in providing cheap and speedy justice to the people at the grassroots level. He said that before tabling the bill the provincial government had briefed opposition parties as well chief of the ruling PML Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain who, according to Maulana Fazl, fully supported the bill.

Maulana Fazl reiterated that the National Security Council was not acceptable in its current form because it determined a direct role for the army. He said that democracy did not approve of military’s role in it.

He said that the component parties of the MMA were still discussing whether he (Fazl) and NWFP Chief Minister Akram Durrani should participate in the council’s meeting.

About the forthcoming local body polls, he said that the central executive council of the JUI had allowed district chapters of the party to have seat adjustment with other groups.

Earlier, the central executive council of the JUI, which met here on Sunday with Maulana Fazlur Rehman in the chair, expressed concern over the law and order situation in the country, particularly in Karachi.

Through a resolution, the council said that the federal interior ministry had failed to maintain peace and provide protection to the people of Karachi.

The JUI denounced privatization of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) and demanded that the government cancel privatization of the phone utility as well as other institutions.
