SUKKUR, July 6: Hundreds of houses and crops came under water, after two breaches, each 75 feet wide, occurred in the Dadu Canal, at Bagarji near Sukkur, on Tuesday night. The breaches occurred at RD-46 and RD-47 in the Dadu Canal, due to which a number of houses in Ghumro Village and hundreds of acres were inundated. Later, officials of the irrigation department closed the spans of Dadu canal from Sukkur barrage and rushed to the scene and started plugging the breaches with the help of villages and completed the job in the afternoon.
However, due to strong pressure of water almost the entire households and stocks of grain and cattle heads were washed away with the water.
Knee deep water had accumulated in the village forcing the villagers to live under the open sky over the embankment of the canal. The Qadirpur loop embankment was under threat since many days as strong current of water was pressurizing its embankments.
The Secretary Irrigation, Ashfaq Memon and the Director SIDA, Zafarullah Mahar, rushed to spot and set up a camp there and ordered extensive measures to protect the loop embankment. On the other hand 300,000 cusecs of water was being discharged from the Guddu Barrage due to which more kutcha area has been inundated, consisting of hundreds of villages.
TWO KILLED: Two people were gunned down on resistance in the Ali Bilawal Domki Village near Kashmore in the early hours of Wednesday, which caused panic and harassment in the area.
Reaching reports here said that about 12 armed people raided the village and untied about 50 cattle heads.
When the villagers woke up, they offered resistance and an exchange of fire took place between the villagers and the bandits. As a result result Rahib Khaldi and Bero Khaldi were killed on the spot while Yasin received bullet injuries who were admitted to Kashmore hospital.
However, the bandits fled from the scene along with cattle heads. Later, in the morning hundreds of the villagers carrying the bodies came at Indus Highway near Buxapur and blocked the highway for several hours.
Senior police officials rushed to the area and negotiated with the protestors and on their assurance that the bandits would be apprehended within 48 hours, they ended blockade.
