Davydenko retires from opening match

GSTAAD (Switzerland), July 5: Top seed Nikolay Davydenko retired from his opening match at the Gstaad Open on Tuesday against Armenia’s Sargis Sargsian with a wrist injury.

The Russian had won the first set 6-1 of the first round match on clay and was 1-0 up in the second when he pulled out.

A similar injury to his right wrist forced Davydenko to retire from his second round match against Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman at Wimbledon last month.

Spadea, Ginepri advance

NEWPORT (Rhode Island): American fifth seed Robby Ginepri dispatched wild card Scott Oudsema 6-2, 6-7 (6/8), 6-0 on Monday in a first-round matchup at the 355,000 Hall of Fame Tennis Championship.

Vincent Spadea, the second seed also from the United States, needed three sets to win Monday, rallying past Alexander Popp, of Germany, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Popp was a finalist here last year, falling to England’s Greg Rusedski in the final, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/2).

The Canadian-born Rusedski is the third seed and awaits a qualifier in the first round.

In the only other first-round match on Monday, sixth seeded Lars Burgsmuller of Germany held a 7-6 (7/3), 3-1 lead over Giovanni Lapentti, of Ecuador, when he retired with a leg injury.
