DERA GHAZI KHAN, July 5: Police baton-charged lawyers on the premises of the district courts on Tuesday for resisting and thwarting construction of a judicial lock-up near the bar room. Reports said the dispute between the bar and the bench over the construction of a judicial lock-up near the district bar room aggravated and led to a clash. Scores of lawyers, including district bar association office-bearers, assembled at the site to stop the construction work. The police, already present there, baton-charged the lawyers on the orders of the duty magistrate and tried to disperse them. During the clash, former bar president Naseem Khan Khosa and Advocate Zafar Baloch sustained minor injuries.
Later on, the matter was resolved after talks between the bar and the bench on the direction of the Lahore High Court chief justice, and it was decided that the judicial lock-up would be constructed at the site of the library after demolishing it.
Bar president Malik Faiz, condemning baton-charge on the lawyers, said it was their right to protest against the construction of the judicial lock-up adjacent to the bar room.
FLOOD: The district administration has sought the help of army to cope with the flood as around 20 villages of Taunsa tehsil and DGK have been inundated.
The affected villages include Basti Manjhota, Bait Lada, Bait Langa, Basti Waily, Habibabad, Bait Ashraf, Bhaideywali, Bageywali, Jhakar Imam, Karam Shah, Rakh Dodah, Makwal, Shumali Makwal, Doda Shumali, Goley Wala, Basti Qasaiwala and Bait Maitla.
Five relief camps in Taunsa and two at Ghazi Ghat have been set up. Cotton over 3,000 acres has been destroyed while at least 2,000 people have been affected by the flood.
INQUIRY: The Punjab deputy inspector-general of jails will hold an inquiry against the Central Jail authorities on Wednesday (today ) on charges of poor security arrangements and misappropriation of funds.
Reports said DIG jails Mian Farooq Nazir had raided the Central Jail on Monday morning and found the security arrangements very poor. Even the duty clerk was also absent from duty.
