BELFAST (Ireland), July 3: Denmark and Bermuda were surprise winners on the second day of the ICC Trophy on Saturday, defeating United States of America (USA) and United Arab Emirates respectively.
The Danes made it two of two in Group ‘A’ with a 96-run thrashing of USA to follow their first-round victory over Uganda by 28 runs on Friday. Opener Frederik Klokker was the star as he carried his bat for his maiden international century, striking 13 fours and two sixes in making 138 off 149 balls as Denmark reached 273 for seven.
Klokker, who was due to travel to Birmingham on Sunday for a trial with Warwickshire, dominated a third-wicket partnership of 175 with skipper Carsten Pedersen (68).
Bermuda, meanwhile, boosted by some late hitting from Lionel Cann, who clobbered a 17-ball 45 with four sixes and as many fours, reached 217 for nine before dismissing the UAE for 187.
Ireland, the hosts, maintained their positive start to the World Cup qualifiers with a comfortable 127-run trouncing of Uganda.
Holland were the day’s biggest winners when they overwhelmed Oman by 258 runs in Group ‘B’. Bas Zuiderent (119) and Daan van Bunge (92) were major contributors as they added 167 for the second wicket. Oman never stood a chance of attaining their target of 326 as they folded up for a measly 67 in 24.1 overs as the Dutch pace attack.
In the same group, Namibia got past Papua New Guinea by 96 runs while Scotland were impressive during their seven-wicket defeat of Canada. Policeman Colin Smith (86), a wicket-keeper-batsman, and Fraser Watts (81) made light work of a small target of 190 as they put on 153 for the unfinished fourth-wicket stand.
