JHANG, June 29: A shutter- down strike was observed in Chiniot on Wednesday to press the administration to grant district status to Chiniot tehsil. There are also reports of partial to complete strike from Bhowna, Lialian Chanab Nagar, Jamiaabad and Rajoya Tons. Heavy contingents of police, Punjab Constabulary and Elite Force were deployed at strategic points and particularly at Tehsil Chowk to prevent a sit in and blocking of the roads by the action committee.

Reinforcements were rushed from the district headquarters to beef up security.

A rally was taken out from the Badshahi Mosque, participated by thousands of man lead by the MNA Sardarzada Tahir Ali Shah, MPA Syed Hasan Murtaza, tehsil Nazim Zulfiqar Ali Shah and secretary general of Zila Banao Movement, Shaukat Azad. The participants marched to the Tehsil Chowk. People’s representatives expressed their resolve to offer sacrifice for the elevation of Chiniot to the status of district.

The rally participants dispersed peacefully after speeches.

There were no reports of any untoward incident from any part of tehsil.
