HANOVER (Germany), June 26: Argentina beat Mexico 6-5 on penalties and will play world champions Brazil in the Confederations Cup final after their semifinal ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time on Sunday.

Carlos Salcido scored after 104 minutes to put Mexico ahead before Luciano Figueroa equalised for Argentina six minutes later.

Both teams finished a scrappy, ill-tempered semifinal with 10 men after Argentina’s Javier Saviola was sent off in the 90th minute for a high and late challenge on Mexico’s Gonzalo Pineda and Mexico’s Rafael Marquez was dismissed three minutes later for a challenge on Pablo Aimar.

They were the first players sent off in the 14 matches played in the tournament so far.

Argentina, who now travel to Frankfurt for Wednesday’s final, beat Brazil 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier earlier this month.

Mexico will meet hosts Germany in the third-fourth place match in Leipzig earlier on Wednesday.—Reuters
