PESHAWAR, June 26: Police used batons and teargas shells to disperse people of Faqirabad and Dalazak road who were protesting against the unscheduled load-shedding by the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) on Saturday night, residents told Dawn.
The people took to streets after a power breakdown at around 10pm on Saturday. Later they assembled at Grand Trunk Road and blocked it. The protesters also pelted a few vehicles with stones.
Police reached the place and started beating the protesters and fired teargas shells to disperse them, according to eye-witnesses.
They said that the protesters returned to their areas, but continued chanting slogans and throwing stones.
The witnesses said the hide and seek between the protesters and the police ended at 4am on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Faqirabad police on Sunday arrested five residents of the area on charges of damaging public property.
They are Khurshed, Abbas, Shamsur Rehman, Muazullah and Mir Zaman.
The protest against load-shedding continued on Sunday. Residents of Hashtnagri, Gulbahar and Charsadda road staged separate protest demonstrations against the Peshawar Electric Supply Company.
However, they dispersed peacefully after registering their protest.
KILLED: Two persons were killed in separate incidents in the city, police officials said.
One Taj Mohammad Shinwari, a resident of Shalman area in the Khyber Agency, was allegedly killed by four people on Saturday in Regi area.
In another incident, some armed men killed one Shakeel, son of Major (retired) Farhad, at a market in Hayatabad locality on Sunday.
