KARACHI, Jan 11: In order to improve public transport system in Karachi, the City District Government is constructing 30 bus terminals in different localities, which will be operated through the private sector. Out of these, work on ten terminals has already been completed.

The provincial minister for labour, transport, industries and local government, Dewan Yousuf Farooqui, who chaired a meeting of the Sindh Economic Development Council here on Friday, directed the concerned authorities to expedite the work on rest of the terminals.

He also asked them to invite tenders from the private sector for commissioning of the terminals as early as possible.

The minister constituted a two-member committee, consisting of Executive District Officer, Transport, Malik Zaheerul Islam, and Director General, Karachi Mass Transit Cell, Dr Muhammad Tahir Soomro, to formulate terms and conditions, besides suggestions for awarding contracts of the terminals to the private sector and submit the report within a week.

Out of the 30 terminals, three will be for inter-provincial bus service, located at entry points of the city, while others would be for inter-city public transport. The project is funded by the World Bank.

The meeting also reviewed introduction of Art Galleries at Hindu Gymkhana, Karachi, for promotion of arts and culture of the province. The minister directed the officials to expedite the renovation work at the historical building.

Dewan Yousuf also directed to gear up efforts for the beautification of Shahrah-i-Faisal from Avari Towers to Quaidabad and to restart work on the Tipu Sultan Park immediately.—PPI
