SHEIKHUPURA, June 22: At least ten undertrial accused and two policemen were injured in a brawl on the premises of Bakhshi Khana (judicial lockup), adjacent to the district courts. Reports said the brawl between the police and undertrial accused erupted as an accused Mujahid was tortured by police. The police claimed that Mujahid had tried to escape from the court.

Other undertrial accused in the lockup protested against the police behaviour and a free for all started between the inmates and the policemen. As a result, the accused, Javaid, Aslam, Tariq, Amjad, Asif, Ilyas, Aslam Mujahid, Imran, Tufail, and a blind accused Hafiz Ghulam Abbas suffered injuries, while two policemen also got wounded.

The injured accused alleged that the police charged Rs100 each from their relatives who visited the lockup to meet them.

Meanwhile, more than 100 undertrial accused chanted slogans against the alleged corruption of police, and broke the ventilators’ glass of the lockup. They demanded cold water and fan at the judicial lockup.

They also demanded an inquiry into the incident and punishment for the policemen involved in it.

Because of the incident, no other accused were taken to any court for trial.
