Protest show outside PA likely today

LAHORE, June 19: Noisy protests are expected both in and outside the Punjab Assembly on Monday as the opposition is determined to flout Speaker Afzal Sahi’s orders of banishing 10 PPP and PML-N MPAs from entering the assembly building.

The banished MPAs had earlier made an attempt to enter the assembly premises on Saturday. However, a police contingent had thwarted the bid.

Mr Sahi had suspended membership of PML-N parliamentary leader Rana Sanaullah for two weeks when the house passed a resolution moved by the treasury on Thursday condemning some “indecent” remarks given by him about the provincial leadership during the budget debate.

The speaker also ordered out Rana Mashhud of the PML-N for raising slogans in the house against the chair when it read out its verdict on Rana Sana.

Seven more MPAs — Sheikh Ijaz, Samiullah Khan, Ishtiaq Mirza, Farzana Raja, Azma Bokhari, Pervez Rafiq and Ashraf Sohna — were banned for two weeks when they protested against the speaker’s banishment orders and resorted to chanting slogans against the chair on Friday.

On Saturday, Nawaz Malik was handed down the same sentence on identical “charges.”
