KARACHI, June 14: Pakistan clinched men’s singles and doubles crowns at the Asian satellite badminton championship which concluded at Kathmandu, Nepal, the other day. According to results, Pakistan No 2 Ashan Qamar, the losing finalist of the recently concluded national badminton championship, annexed the men’s singles title when he downed Thufhara-Edirifing He of Sri Lanka 1-15, 15-11, 15-0.

Earlier, he cruised into the final by having the better of India’s Utsav Mishra 15-12, 15-5.

Former national champion, Wajid Ali was eliminated in the men’s singles semifinals losing to Thufhara-Edirifing He.

The men’s doubles title was annexed by the national champion pair of Waqas Ahmad-Tahir Ishaq who handed a 15-6, 15-1 defeat to Duminda Jayauody-Thufhara Edirifing He of Sri Lanka. In the pre-finals, the eventual champions’ brushed aside Nepalese pair of Pashupadi Panperu-Pankaj Chand 15-7, 15-4.

The two women shuttlers’, national champion, Aysha Akram and Sara Khan could not go beyond last eight stage. While the former was eliminated in the initial rounds, the latter made exit in the quarterfinals.

The six-member team including two women, returned home from the Nepalese capital on Monday.
