KPT plans OP-1 reconstruction

KARACHI: The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) on Wednesday signed engineering consultancy agreement with German firm Inros Lackner and Pakistani company Techno Consult for the reconstruction of Oil Pier-1 (OP-1).

Under the agreement, the consultants will prepare design, estimates and tender documents for the KPT. They have been asked by the KPT to enhance the capacity of OP-1 so that tankers with 100,000 DWT could be accommodated at the port.

The OP-1 reconstruction facility will enable the Karachi port to handle all types of liquid cargoes. Currently, the port has three oil piers with OP-1 having outlived its life of 40 years since it was constructed in 1978.
