Dr Amjad quits as APML chairman

KARACHI: Dr Muhammad Amjad, chairman of the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), founded by ex-military ruler retired general Pervez Musharraf, on Friday resigned from the party’s top post.

According to a statement released by the APML’s joint information secretary, Dr Amjad submitted his resignation to the party’s core committee.

He was nominated as the chairman of the party by Mr Musharraf in his place in June.

Some private TV news channels, quoting Dr Amjad, reported that he would send his resignation to the Election Commission of Pakistan by Monday.

The statement said the core committee had appointed Hidayatullah Kheshgi as the acting chairman of the APML.

It said Dr Amjad would now take care of Mr Musharraf’s legal matters.

Last month, Dr Amjad had quit the race for NA-53 Islamabad-II in favour of the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan after a meeting with him at Banigala.

Dr Amjad had also withdrawn APML’s Ashraf Shehzad Khan from NA-54 Islamabad-III in favour of PTI’s Asad Umar.
