Pemra directs TV channels to stop airing election-related content

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has taken notice of election-related programmes running on different television channels and has directed them to stop airing such content and discussions.

This step was taken after Pemra received concerns forwarded by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding violations being made by private satellite TV channels.

According to the ECP, TV channels were airing recorded footage of public gatherings, addresses of political parties and candidates made till July 23. Pemra explained that as per ECP directives, “election campaigns or propagation of political parties/candidates should be stopped forthwith”.

“Repeat telecast in the garb of reporting of political gatherings, public addresses of political party’s leadership, statements/comments by any political leader or party representative in any talk show or road show should also be stopped,” Pemra added.

The electronic media regulator has also directed that opinion polls or surveys conducted either by the channel or through any independent source/agency be taken off air as it may influence voters as well as the electoral process.

Pemra further said that all satellite TV channels and FM radio licencees had been asked to provide specific information with regard to significance of the elections, vote, electoral process and security.

Moreover, the public should also be motivated to cast their vote and perform their national duty by making democratic process successful, it added.
