PESHAWAR, June 4: NWFP Governor Khalil-ur-Rehman said on Saturday that the Frontier Corps had played an effective role in handling the question of foreign elements and restoring peace and normalcy in South Waziristan and other areas. The governor paid a visit to the FC Headquarters at the Balahisar Fort here on Saturday where he was briefed on the salient features of the force’s working and its role in maintenance of law and order in the country, a handout issued here said.
Praising the FC’s performance, he said it was doing a lot yet it might face greater challenges in maintaining peace in the future.
He said that the responsibilities of the force in an area like Fata were not only quite sensitive but also of great importance keeping in view the unique system of governance.
The governor said that due to the porous nature of western border, the responsibilities of the force had also increased. He expressed the confidence that the force would ably discharge its duties.
Both the government and the people “have great expectations” from the FC in this connection. Keeping in view its track record and past achievements, it was rightly expected to deliver in the future as well, he said.
In addition to the Inspector General of the Corps, Maj-Gen Tariq Masood, the briefing was also attended by senior officers of the force.
On arrival at the fort, a smartly turned-out contingent of the FC presented guard of honour.
According to another handout, Zafarullah Khan, an MPA from Lakki Marwat, called on the governor on Saturday and apprised him of the problems faced by his district people.
The governor assured him that efforts would be made to ensure early start of work on the establishment of a 132 kv grid station for electricity supply to Lakki Marwat.
Talking to the MPA the governor said that the government, was making hectic efforts for people’s wellbeing.
“The agriculture development is also being given special consideration. A plan is under way to launch work on the Kurram Tangi Dam as well,” he said.
In a separate meeting with a delegation from Darra Adam Khel, the governor directed the authorities to settle the issue between residents of Adezai and Darra Adam Khel over incidents of kidnappings and car-lifting.
