KARACHI, May 31: Opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has said that a government incapable of ensuring protection to its assembly building, which is subjected to threatening calls, has no right to remain in power. “Sindh must get rid of such a government,” he remarked while addressing a press conference on Tuesday in his chamber where Sindh PPP President Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Ms Shama Mithani, Ms Sharfunnisa Leghari, Dr Mehreen Bhutto, Ms Nuzhat Pathan and other MPAs were also present.
Earlier, after the requisition session was prorogued, the joint opposition had staged a sit-in on the steps of the assembly building against the deputy speaker’s order proclaiming the session prorogued.
Describing the attitude of treasury benches during Tuesday session as ‘non-serious’, Mr Khuhro said that after question hour and reading of the privilege motion on the agenda, Mr Mohammad Hussain, who was presiding over the session, had given the floor to Law Minister Chaudhry Iftekhar Ahmed. Instead of giving his opinion on the motion, the minister resorted to opposing extension in time for the session.
The chair also started reading out suddenly the order to prorogue the session, he recalled.
For this requisition session, Mr Khuhro said, the opposition members had made preparations to have enough business so that the session could continue and deliberate upon the issues to find a solution to the related problems.
He pointed out that besides putting up questions, the opposition had submitted 83 adjournment motions.
However, he regretted, the session was prorogued without any justification as there was no provocation during the questions hour.
He referred to Deputy Speaker Rahila Tiwana’s contention, that she had received calls threatening the assembly building, and her confession that ensuring protection to the house amid the untoward incidents in the city was not possible, reflected the government’s incompetence to deal with the situation.
Mr Khuhro held the government responsible for all kidnappings, killings, bomb blasts and acts of violence in the province.
He wondered that despite spending Rs12 billion annually on maintaining law and order, the government appeared unsure of its capability to protect even the assembly building.
He referred to the series of target killings during the present government’s tenure, and said that MPA Aslam Mujahid was kidnapped and killed on May 30 and on the same date last year, Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai had been assassinated.
He accused the government of issuing only security alert instead of taking effective steps to recover Aslam Mujahid.
The government had recently decided to retain the Rangers, in spite of making big scale recruitment in police that appeared active in arresting innocent people but quite inactive in arresting a guilty minister.
