From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1968: Fifty Years Ago: Altaf Husain dies

KARACHI: Dawn deeply regrets to announce the death of its former editor, Mr Altaf Husain, a close lieutenant of the Quaid-i-Azam.

Mr Altaf Husain, 68, who had been ill for quite some time, died of heart failure at his Karachi residence at 12.5 p.m. yesterday [May 25]. Present at his bedside were Begum Altaf Husain, and his daughter, Zeba Zubair. The end came peacefully.

Till recently Central Minister for Industries and Natural Resources, Mr Altaf Husain had resigned for reasons of health. The resignation became effective on May 15.

He had come to Karachi in the middle of April, and since then had been staying here — most of the time confined to bed. He was preparing to go abroad for treatment. In fact, a few minutes before his death, a cable was received from Dr Goodwyn of the London Postgraduate Hospital, intimating that he was willing to receive Mr Altaf Husain in London for treatment. It was Dr Goodwyn who had treated him last year when he remained critically ill in London.
